Vision: Transforming the Kenyan Economy

The Intellectual Property Initiative’s vision is a Kenya in which intellectual property ownership is as common and as economically consequential as land title deeds — a Kenya that moves from commodity exporter to owner of the designs, processes, formulations and brands that define African value chains.

GDP growth projections for Kenya in 2026 currently range between approximately 4.3 % (World Bank) and 4.6–5.3 % (AfDB/CBK ranges), constrained by external shocks. The Intellectual Property Initiative views robust Intellectual Property institutions as a structural accelerator that can lift the medium-term growth trajectory by improving the investment climate, facilitating technology absorption and enabling capital mobilization against Intellectual Property Assets.

By 2035 The Intellectual Property Initiative aims to:

  • Embed Intellectual Property literacy and registration as standard practice for the majority of formal and semi-formal businesses.
  • Raise manufacturing’s contribution to GDP substantially toward the long-stated 20 % target by enabling local ownership of utility iterations and process innovations.
  • Position Kenyan firms to capture a disproportionate share of the estimated additional $1.6 billion in regional exports (tea, processed foods, light manufacturing) that AfCFTA modelling, projects by 2030, and the broader gains projected under deeper integration scenarios (World Bank estimates of up to 4.9 % higher real GDP and 12–13 % higher income by 2035 when non-tariff measures, investment and Intellectual Property protocols are fully leveraged).
  • Convert Kenya’s comparative advantages in coffee, tea, avocados, mangoes, dairy, maize, hides & skins, and natural cosmetics into protected, branded, value-added product lines owned by Kenyan entities rather than foreign licensees.
